In Florida, there are currently about 19,000 children in foster care. The average age is 10. About 50% will not complete high school and almost 95% will never earn a college degree. With nearly 400,000 foster kids in the foster care system in the United States, 75 % of 17 y-olds have changed schools over 5 times.
Millions from taxpayer funds are invested in this system every year, yet there are still numerous foster kids lacking stability, good health and guidance in order to “age-out” of the system safely and thrive in life.
Has privatizing the foster care system really helped protect these vulnerable kids?
This conversation shine a light on what Florida foster kids go through.
As Case Workers, Guardian Ad Litem, Caregivers and even Foster Parents, you all deserve to be part of this conversation.
Specific Learning Objectives:
• Understand what happens to foster kids when they are in the foster care system.
• Hear examples on how certain parents, guardians and caregivers have navigated this system for the benefit of foster kids.
• Identify the basic children’s rights impacted in foster care.
• Learn about the laws regarding involuntary psychiatric examinations and medication prescription within the foster care system.
