CCHR Florida has documented evidence of better alternatives then the present mental health system. Dr. Thomas Szasz states, “Old age homes, workshops, temporary homes for indigent persons whose family ties have been disintegrated, progressive prison communities – these and many other facilities will be needed to assure that tasks now entrusted to mental hospitals.”
Dr. Timothy Scott in his book America Fooled, states that there once were facilities which used “moral treatment”. They reported an 80 to 91% recovery from schizophrenia using “moral treatment”. Considering psychiatry’s belief that schizophrenia is “incurable”, how can one account for this success rate?
Patients were given a clean place to live on a farm, given work to do, good nutrition, and quiet time. They recovered on average in 6 to 9 months.
