Chance to win an 8 hour session time in a top analog studio. Mix magazine named the studio “one of this year’s hottest new studios”, 2010.

Message of video entry:

Millions of children worldwide are placed on mind-altering psychiatric drugs. Their parents are never given the full information on the FDA warnings and side effects.  This leads to tragic consequences.  Parents are not told that there are no medical tests to prove that one single mental health disorder exists.  They are not told that there are medical tests that can be done to detect underlying physical causes, such as nutritional deficiencies, allergies, thyroid problems and more.

Music and poetry are universal languages that can be used to communicate the truth to millions of families.

Enter your music/performance video in our contest and help to inform parents-help the children.

Rules of contest:

1. One music or perfomance poetry video submission per contestant

2. A $15 donation to our non-profit organization is required for the video submission. Call 727-442-8820; or email Laurie@cchrflorida.org

3. Appropriate language required. (will be presented and viewed by families)

4. All submission need to be no longer than 4 minutes.

Federal Mental Health Care Gives Big Pharma Carte Blanche

Friday, 04 April 2010

When it comes to the mental health and pharmaceutical industries there are no czars, executive compensation caps or anti-trust policies.

On the contrary, with the passage of recent Mental Health Care legislation, Big Pharma now has free reign to develop and set their own pricing on new mental health drugs with government regulations that makes it illegal for the competition to offer less expensive and/or safer generic drugs for twelve years.  If only General Motors could get such a deal.

No other industry is provided the same privileges as Mental Health, particularly one that is built on a house of cards having absolutely no legitimate science behind it. (more…)

FDA Considers Re-Classification of ECT Device

Saturday, 01 January 2010

The FDA is considering the reclassification of the device used to administer electroconvulsive therapy from its current category as a Class III medical device to Class II.

Class III medical devices have the most stringent regulatory controls. For Class III medical devices, sufficient information is not available to assure safety and effectiveness through the application of General Controls and Special Controls.

Class II medical devices are devices where General Controls are not sufficient to assure safety and effectiveness and existing methods/standards/guidance documents are available to provide assurances of safety and effectiveness. Examples of Class II devices include physiologic monitors, x-ray systems, gas analyzers, pumps, and surgical drapes. (more…)

Feds investigating high prescribing Fla. docs

By KELLI KENNEDY
Associated Press Writer

MIAMI (AP) — The federal government has stopped reimbursing a Miami doctor who wrote nearly 97,000 prescriptions for mental health drugs to Medicaid patients over 18 months, in a case that prompted a key Senator to call for a nationwide investigation.

U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa said Dr. Fernando Mendez Villamil wrote an average of 153 prescriptions a day for 18 months ending in March 2009. That’s nearly twice the number of the second highest prescriber in Florida, who wrote a little more than 53,000 prescriptions, according to a list compiled by state officials. (more…)

Psychiatric Services asks: Florida’s Outpatient Commitment Law – A Lesson in Failed Reform?

Thursday, 11 November 2009

The Florida State Senate reported, “in 1971, the Florida Legislature passed into law the ‘Florida Mental Health Act,’ also known as the ‘Baker Act’ (chapter 394 [part I], F.S.). This Act brought about a dramatic and comprehensive revision of Florida’s mental health laws…” (Florida State Senate 2009)

This drastically changed the process of involuntary commitment, (also known as civil commitment) and the civil rights of individuals in psychiatric facilities.  There have been several revisions to the Baker Act since then.  The goal was to increase outpatient psychiatric care and significantly decrease involuntary commitment.  Yet beginning July 2004 through June 2007 there had been 71 orders for outpatient commitment and 41,997 adults having two or more 72-hour holds for observation in psychiatric institutions under Florida’s civil commitment law. (Petrila and Christy 2009)

Florida has a population of approximately 19 million.  In contrast, the State of New York has a population of over 19 million and in the five years following their new statutes on the subject only 10,000 individuals were referred for outpatient care.  And of those 10,000, only 4,041 petitions were actually filed; and 93% of those were granted. (Appelbaum 2005) (more…)
